The simple joy of having a tidy home is not a new trend. Marie Kondo and her New York Times best-selling books and popular Netflix series just made the feeling, and preceding work it takes to evoke such a feeling, en vogue. Basically she made cleaning cool by glamorizing the peace of mind that comes from everything having a place. But before a drawer can ever be organized, or be the best use of its allotted square footage, it has to exist in the first place. That’s where Closets by Design excels. Their completely custom, built-in cabinet and closet systems take tidying up a notch by creating, and more specifically maximizing, spaces to help you achieve such life-changing magic.
Ask any woman and she’ll likely agree – the desire for more magic and less chaos caused by clutter is what typically prompts late night Amazon binge buys and target hauls for organization totes, bins and boxes. But magic rarely comes through temporary fixes. “Most homeowners come to us after they’ve tried everything ‘out-of-the-box’ from DIY systems, finding they just don’t complete the project and definitely don’t spark joy.” says Frances Hutto, co-owner of Closets by Design and Head of Sales. The investment in something permanent, completely customized to the space changes the outcome tremendously. She, and her husband Mark, opened the Closets by Design Jacksonville Franchise in 2019, combining their interests in design and world-class manufacturing. Their company is now the largest in Northeast Florida with nearly 100 team members. Together the Closets by Design team brings the joy of a completely organized and styled home to our area with a Mary Poppins-esque snap of a finger.
“For one recent client, we were able to maximize their narrow primary walk-in closet, giving them an additional 49 linear feet of storage space that was completely unused with their DIY systems.” explains Frances. It’s the design process where these discoveries unfold. For every project, they come to your home to review the space as it’s used now to see how they can enhance its use. This starts with lots of measurements and follows with recommendations for replacing wire-shelves, metal shoe racks and random wall hooks with floor-to-ceiling wood cabinetry with adjustable shelving, drawer systems, shoe shelves and specialty lighting. It’s not about just improving function, though – it’s combining practicality with aesthetics to deliver form AND function to the homeowner. The true reflection of how this space will spark joy for the homeowner begins to unfold during the selection of finishes. Samples of nearly every wood grain and color swatch, drawer pulls and clothing rods of varying metallics set out to see and touch are like the pieces of clothing they hold – both portray personality.
In a short time, every idea the homeowner longingly pinned on Pinterest starts to formulate in-person through their 3D Design Software and suddenly they are looking at the Carrie Bradshaw closet or Martha Stewart pantry of their dreams. “These spaces are where you start your day, imagine if they could make you smile!” Frances exclaims. Smiles are hard to hold back on installation day. Anthony, a master carpenter who has worked with Closets by Design for over 5 years recalls, “Sometimes the homeowner is so excited they start putting their clothes back even before I’ve ever finished!”
Closets by Design is the only major closet company that makes their products here locally. Once your project is ready to go, nearly all of their manufacturing is done at their CNC automated Jacksonville location off Philips Highway. Having local control of their inventory allows them to be more “nimble” in serving their client base, allowing most projects to be completed in just a few weeks with features the smaller companies can’t offer. They’re not just a closet company. Aside from kitchens and baths, Closet by Design systems are built for any room that needs to store things. From offices and entertainment centers, to closets, pantries, hobby spaces, and garages, they can build practical organizational systems that help make life a little easier. They also work closely with clients to design systems that allow them to stay within their investment range. “It’s not about cabinets, it’s about the joy that comes with everything having a place.” says Frances. “We help you use every square inch of your home, in a way that is completely unique to you.”
