Pie in the Sky has spent the past decade bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to seniors who might otherwise go without them. This fall, the St. Johns County nonprofit is inviting the community to pull up a chair, lace up its boots and help keep those deliveries going.
The organization’s inaugural Harvest Hoedown, themed “Boots, Bushels & Big Hearts,” is set for Thursday, October 15, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Tringali Barn at Heritage Farms. The fundraiser will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Pie in the Sky’s senior produce program while raising support for nearly 960 seniors across St. Johns County.
The setting is intentionally down-home: a harvest supper, live music, dancing and silent and live auctions. Johnny Barnes of Hastings fame will serve his homestyle fried chicken alongside fresh vegetables, while the Thick and Thin String Band and Friends provide the evening’s soundtrack. No two-stepping experience is required.
Behind the party is a growing local need. Pie in the Sky began in Hastings in 2009 as a grassroots effort to fill gaps in available services. Today, its work reaches seniors throughout the county, addressing hunger alongside the social isolation that can make aging alone especially difficult.
“The number of seniors we are serving grows every day,” said Malea Guiriba, founder and CEO of Pie in the Sky. “Your support is needed now more than ever.”
Funds raised through the Harvest Hoedown will go directly to the organization’s senior produce program, helping place fresh food in the hands of local older adults. Guests can support the effort by attending the supper and auction, or by making a direct gift to the program from afar. Recurring monthly donations are also available.
Tickets go on sale September 1. A limited number of sponsorships remain available.
For Pie in the Sky, the evening offers a chance to acknowledge 10 years of work while gathering neighbors around a practical, immediate purpose: ensuring that seniors across St. Johns County have fresh food on their tables and a community looking out for them.
