Lace Up Your shoes, Take Your Mark, and Make Your Way Through the Local 5ks Courses this Summer

While the heat and humidity rises through the summer months, for us who live near and along the coastal front, we have easy access to breezy, scenic routes that set the perfect backdrop for early morning runs. As the sun begins to peek over the horizon and settles in the sky, the offshore breeze offers a fresh, crisp relief that encourages you to keep moving till the end of your route. That said, no matter the time of day, it’s vital to stay hydrated, drink plenty of water and electrolytes, and don’t forget to protect your skin from the warm sun with sunblock and hats.

Whether you are trying to run or walk and you’re in need of some extra motivation to keep you getting up and staying active, support a local cause and join others in the community for a 5k this summer.

June 27th, lace up your shoes and head over to the Christ Episcopal Church for the 16th annual  Big Bang 5k. Starting at 8am, the race takes participants through a flat course that winds through the Ponte Vedra Beach neighborhood roads and along the golf course. Immediately after, at 9am, those participating in the 1-Mile Fun Run will take off.

Everyone who registers before the end of June 17th will also receive a patriotic-themed shirt. Until midnight, June 15th, registration for the 5k costs $30 and $17 for children 14 and under. The price increases to $35 and $20 for children 14 and under from June 16-26. For those who want to jump in at the last minute, you can register onsite on June 27th for $40 and $25 for children 14 and under – cash only. Participation in the 1-Mile Fun Run costs $13. All proceeds will support Christ Episcopal Church’s local charitable outreach projects, helping those in the community who are in need.

Just a few weeks later, on July 11th, the 42nd annual Bridge of Lions 5k will return. At 7:30am, racers will take their places in front of the Castillo de San Marco, make their way across the Bridge of Lions, and wind through beautiful Davis Shores before crossing the finish line in Oglethorpe Park on Anastasia Island.

This race is limited to 1,550 participants. Through May 30th, the cost of participation is $40. The cost of entry will increase to $45 through June 29th, and until the morning of July 11th, those still interested in joining can register for $50. Everyone who registered before June 27th will receive a free t-shirt, with all other participants receiving one based on a first-come, first-served basis. Funds from this raise go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation to make life-changing wishes come true for children diagnosed with critical illnesses.
